Parity Bit Calculator

Compute the even/odd parity bit — the count of 1s sets the parity.

Basic No backend · 100% client-side

What it does: Compute the even/odd parity bit and full code word for your data.

When to use it: When doing simple error detection for serial links or storage.

How to use the parity bit calculator

Enter the data and pick a type.

  1. 01

    Enter the data

    In decimal / 0x / 0b form, for example 0b1011.

  2. 02

Pick parity type and bit width

Even or odd parity; the bit width sets the number of data bits.

  3. 03

    Read the parity bit

Get the count of 1s, the parity bit, and the full code word with the parity bit appended.

FAQ

Common questions, answered in 3 minutes

What is the difference between even and odd parity?

Even parity makes the total number of 1s in "data + parity bit" even; odd parity makes it odd. The receiver checks against the same rule to detect a single-bit error.

Can parity correct errors?

No. It can only detect an odd number of flipped bits (an even number goes undetected). Use a Hamming code to correct errors.

Where does the parity bit go?

Wherever you agree on — commonly the MSB or LSB. This tool appends the parity bit to the end of the data (the LSB side) for display.
